GULFPORT -- A man suspected in the theft of a bottle of cologne from Wal-Mart was discovered driving a stolen truck and chased on U.S. 90, Gulfport police said.

Officers responded to a shoplifting report at the U.S. 49 store at 6:24 p.m., according to a police statement, and learned the man had fled in a 2007 Ford F-150 pickup down Three Rivers Road toward Airport Road.

Police learned the truck had been reported stolen in George County. They spotted it about an hour later near Hewes Avenue and Glover Street, officials said.

The driver, Kentrell Beamer, 32, of Pascagoula, fled and police pursued him west on U.S. 90, officials said.

The truck crashed near 20th avenue, and Beamer and two passengers were taken to the hospital with moderate injuries.

Beamer was later admitted to the hospital because of the severity of his injuries, officials said.

Charges are pending and the investigation is ongoing.
