Monken plans to keep Buckley's former position the same at USM

Steve Buckley operated under the title of associate head coach and director of player personnel before he stepped down Wednesday at Southern Miss, and head coach Todd Monken plans to fill that exact position with a new hire.

With Buckley's departure, Monken could have chosen to go in a different direction with that position, but he feels like it's important that someone fill the role that Buckley served.

"We'll keep it the same as long as I'm involved in the offense," Monken said. "We plan to keep it is a ninth coach that's involved some in the spring. We really wanted to dedicate that job to recruiting. (Buckley) helped build this program.

"Steve did a great job and I think he fit that role perfectly."

Buckley worked the last two years at USM, serving as offensive coordinator Ellis Johnson's one year at the school.
