Buckley steps down from USM football staff

Steve Buckley has stepped down as a member of the Southern Miss football staff, the school announced Wednesday.

Buckley, who worked on the USM staff two times previously, was the only coach to work both under Ellis Johnson and current head coach Todd Monken.

He served as offensive coordinator under Johnson and worked in the role of associate head coach and director of player personnel in his one season under Monken.

Buckley has decided to get out of coaching.

“I had a chance to go back into private business and it was too good of an opportunity to pass up at this time,” Buckley said in the release. “I appreciate the opportunity that the university and coach Monken have given me and I wish them nothing but success.”

Buckley worked as a running backs coach at USM from 1989-90 and returned for 1997-99 in the same role.

“While he was here with us, Steve did a tremendous job with our program,” Monken said in the press release. “He was essential in our recruiting efforts when I first got the job and continued to do that for the last year. He will certainly be missed and we wish him nothing but the best.”
