Former West Virginia running back Vernard Roberts announced his verbal commitment to Southern Miss Tuesday on his Twitter account.

Roberts, a native of Washington D.C., joins USM from ASA, a junior college in Brooklyn, N.Y.

Roberts saw early playing time at West Virginia in 2011 before transferring from the school. He began the 2011 season as the starting running back and rushed for 140 yards and three touchdowns in 11 games for the Mountaineers.

He left West Virginia because of academic reasons along with his brother, cornerback Vance Roberts, who is also reportedly being recruited by USM. Both players initially landed at Iowa Western Community College out of WVU, helping the team win the NJCAA national championship in 2012.

GoldenEaglePride.com reports that Vernard Roberts will enroll at USM in August and will immediately be eligible. He has two years of eligibilty left.
