Report: USM likely to hire SFA's Underwood

Posted by PATRICK MAGEE on April 29, 2014

It appears that Southern Miss has settled on its new head coach, and it's the same man that's been the top candidate for the last week.

Gary Parrish of reported Tuesday night that USM has offered its job to Underwood and that he is expected to accept.

Underwood has been considered the top candidate at USM for the last week after Donnie Tyndall left to take the job at Tennessee after two years in Hattiesburg.

Underwood just finished his first season as a Division I head coach at SFA with a 32-3 record and a victory over VCU in the NCAA Tournament.

A former assistant at Kansas State and South Carolina, Underwood was presented the Joe B. Hall Award earlier this month as the top first-year coach in college basketball.

Underwood, a Kansas native, has also served as an assistant at Western Illinois and served as a head coach at Dodge City (Kan.) Community College and Daytona Beach (Fla.) Community College.

Underwood inherited an SFA team that went 27-5 in 2012-13.
