Report: Ladner in the mix at Southern Miss

Posted by PATRICK MAGEE on April 29, 2014

Southeastern Louisiana head coach Jay Ladner is under consideration for the same job at Southern Miss, ESPN's Jeff Goodman reports.

Ladner was announced as the new coach at Southeastern Louisiana earlier this month, but he has deep ties to Southern Miss.

Ladner also indicated in his report that USM search "was coming down to the wire" and that Stephen F. Austin's Brad Underwood remains the favorite.

He added "don't count out Jay Ladner."

He was a part of the USM basketball team that won the 1987 NIT championship and Ladner received some consideration for the USM job in 2012.

After not getting on the staff at USM, Ladner took the job at Jones County Junior College, where he lead the Bobcats to the 2014 NJCAA Division I national championship.

Ladner was the head coach at St. Stanislaus from 1991-2011.

Goodman reported Sunday that Iowa State assistant Doc Sadler is also in the hunt for the USM job.

Other potential candidates include Kentucky assistant Kenny Payne, Eastern Kentucky head coach Jeff Neubauer, Wichita State assistant Greg Heiar, Murray State head coach Steve Prohm and Florida assistant John Pelphrey.
