Troy evens series with Southern Miss

— Troy evened the weekend series with a 5-0 win over Southern Miss thanks to a strong pitching performance from starter Shane McCain.

The left-handed McCain gave up no runs on four hits in seven innings as he improved to 2-1, striking out six and walking two.

The loss ended a three-game winning streak for Southern Miss, which drops to 5-6.

“I just think (McCain) challenged us with fastballs and we didn't catch up with him,” USM coach Scott Berry said. “I don't know if he was sneaky quick with it, but I think it was majority fastballs and we just did not put good swings on him. He came right at us.”

Southern Miss had its leadoff batter reach in the fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth innings, but could never get a rally going.

Taylor Nunez will be the starting pitcher for Southern Miss at 1 p.m. on Sunday against Troy.
