Jazzmun Holmes scored 18 points and Shaneice Cooper added 14 as Harrison Central defeated Biloxi 65-36 in the 6A Girls South State quarterfinals at Harrison Central on Monday night. Philmecia Drakeford had 10 points as did Adyn Strickland for HCHS (19-10).
Jada Gnuschke led Biloxi with 12 points.
"There was a little lull but overall we played great defense,'' Harrison Central coach Nancy Ladner said. "Defense is our strength.''
It was Harrison Central's third win over Biloxi this season.
Harrison Central faces the Brandon on Friday in the South State semifinals at Brandon. Brandon defeated Forest Hill 61-51 Monday night.
Pass Christian girls 51, McComb 32: Aliyah Bell scored 22 points and Sydney Booker chipped in 11 as the Lady Pirates won their 4A Girls South State opener in Pass Christian. Pass improves to 18-13 and will meet Raymond in the 4A quarterfinals on Thursday at Raymond.
North Pike 64, Moss Point 61: Moss Point was eliminated in its 4A Girls South State opener at North Pike. Maya Harvey had 26 points for Moss Point (8-20).
South Pike 59, Poplarville 29: Poplarville was eliminated by South Pike in its 4A Girls South State opener at South Pike. South Pike improved to 24-7 and will meet Forrest County AHS in the South State quarterfinals Thursday.
Division 7-5A team announced: West Harrison's Doug Bazzell is the Division 7-5A Coach of the Year. West Harrison's Deshawn Jones is the 7-5A Most Valuable Player while West Harrison's Zaylan Lee is the 7-5A Defensive Player of the Year. Picayune's Shemar Williams is the 7-5A Offensive Player of the Year.
The All-Division 7-5A team is made up of West Harrison's Maurice Stephens, Harvey Smart and Julius Buckhalter; Picayune's Shemar Williams, Donovan Rice, and Hakeem Magee; Stone High's Peyton Owen and Amari Lewis; and Long Beach's Jumanne Warren and Devin Johnson.
