GULFPORT -- Red-hot Mississippi State and No. 15 Baylor highlight a 10-team college field for the inaugural Mississippi Gulf Coast Softball Classic, which will be played at the Gulfport Sportsplex on Friday through Sunday.
Mississippi State comes into the tournament with a 14-0 record after beating Iowa 9-1 on Sunday in Starkville.
Baylor (12-3) is ranked 15th nationally and beat Northwestern 4-0 Sunday.
Joining Mississippi State and Baylor in the field are Texas-San Antonio (UTSA), Louisiana-Lafayette (UL-L), Texas State, Memphis, Ohio, South Alabama, Chattanooga and Nicholls (La.) State.
Play begins Friday at 11 a.m., with nine games scheduled for three fields.
The tournament renews Saturday at 8:30 a.m. and the third and final round will start at 7 a.m. on Sunday.
Friday's opening-round games at Field 1 are UTSA vs. ULL at 11 a.m.; Mississippi State vs. UTSA at 2 p.m.; ULL vs. Baylor at 5 p.m.; and Mississippi State vs. Baylor at 8 p.m.
Three games will be played Friday at Field 3: Texas State vs. Memphis at noon; Ohio vs. South Alabama at 3 p.m.; and Chattanooga vs. Ohio at 6 p.m.
Two games will be played Friday at Field 4: Nicholls State vs. Chattanooga at 3 p.m.; and South Alabama vs. Nicholls State at 6 p.m.
Ten games are slated for Saturday and six for Sunday.
There is a high-school component to the tournament, with 25 varsity teams and 12 junior varsity teams. There will be 25 varsity games and six junior varsity games. High school action begins at 2 p.m. Friday with the last game starting at 6 p.m. Saturday. Games will be seven innings with a two-hour time limit.
