JACKSON COUNTY -- Mississippi Highway Patrol Cpl. Jason Gazzo said two people are dead after an accident about 6 p.m. Saturday on Interstate 10 near mile-marker 48.
Gazzo said an 18-wheeler containing a hazardous substance was westbound on I-10, lost control, crossed the median and struck an eastbound vehicle. Both drivers died, he said. The 18-wheeler's tank did not rupture in the accident.
Gazzo said at 7:50 p.m. that two eastbound lanes are open, but two will remain closed while the accident is being cleared. He said he expects the lanes to remain closed for several hours. Gazzo asked that motorists take an alternate route if possible.
Jackson County Coroner Vicki Broadus said the identities of those who died are being withheld until next of kin can be notified.
