Michael Zangari had 17 points for the Pirates (15-13, 4-9 C-USA), who have won two straight games. Prince Williams finished with 10 points and eight boards.
Sean Obi logged a double-double with 14 points, on 7-of-8 shooting from the floor, and 12 rebounds while Austin Ramljak added 13 points for the Owls (7-19, 2-11), who extended their losing streak to four in a row.
ECU made 56 percent of its shots from the field in the first period of play, as it led 40-24 at the half. Rice connected on 40.9 percent of its field goal attempts and turned the ball over eight times.
Despite shooting just 36.8 percent in the second frame, the Pirates maintained their lead for the half. With 9:46 remaining the Owls made it a two-point game after a Max Guercy layup. ECU answered by going on a 9-0 run and never looked back.
The Pirates held a 36-30 rebounding edge over the Owls and also outscored the visitors at the charity stripe, 19-3.
