What's in a name? It could mean the difference between a "base hit" and a "home run!"
It's evident Biloxi is on base with the community in regard to our new baseball stadium and team. The news is filled with suggestions for the team name based on the owner's statement that "Biloxi" has a "good chance" of being in name. However, many fans think that there's a "better chance" of attracting more fans with a coastal name.
Biloxi Breeze does sound good, but I've changed my thinking on this. Here's why. First, had Gulfport built a ballpark at their harbor last year and the Gulfport Shippers were to begin play this spring, how many season tickets would be held by Biloxi fans? Not many, I'd bet. Well
Second, Jim Martin's recent Letter to the Editor pointed out the golden opportunity before us to honor the boat captains and their contributions, the Biloxi Skippers. Think about it; what has touched the lives of more people (not only in Biloxi, but along the entire Gulf Coast) than the seafood and fun provided for decades by the boat captains, both licensed and self-appointed? So, the home run may be to recognize the nautical heritage of our culture as the common thread of Biloxi's Gulf Coast community -- the community that has the potential to exceed expectations of fan participation. This could be the ticket -- at least 4,000 anyway.
So Jim, let's team up and go with Gulf Coast Skippers.
It too could be a home run!
