BILOXI -- The Mississippi Surge came back from 2-0 to take a 3-2 overtime win over the Peoria Rivermen on Friday night at the Coast Coliseum.
With 14.4 seconds remaining, one of the Surge's newest players Lucas LaBelle stole the puck and raced down the ice to fire a bullet past goalie Kyle Rank and take the win.
The Surge's play in overtime was amazing. Aided by a few key miscues by the Rivermen, the Surge overcame three penalties that briefly placed them at a 5-3 disadvantage.
Surge coach Jeff Bes attributed the overtime play to teamwork.
"It was the guys actually doing the hard work and killing the penalties," he said.
The overtime was set up by Bill Baker's tying goal at 14:15 in the third. With time running out, Baker zipped a long one in for the 2-2 tie. It was a sweet victory for Baker after collecting two penalties in the second and having strong exchanges with a few of the Rivermen. Jordan Peddle and Justin MacDonald assisted on the goal.
The Rivermen came out playing hard and scored first at 1:47 on a goal by Garrett Vermeersch. They struck again at 13:16. Surge goalie Matthieu Dugas became fully extended across the net defending a shot. When Dugas' teammates couldn't clear the puck, Matt Viola chipped one in over the goalie's legs to put Peoria up 2-0.
