PASCAGOULA -- A former nurse at Ocean Springs Hospital pleaded guilty Thursday to charges accusing him of downloading thousands of images of children engaged in sex acts.
Alberto S. Gonzalez, 45, entered the plea to seven charges of child exploitation before Circuit Judge Dale Harkey.
The state recommended a sentence of 30 years on each count to run concurrently, with 15 years to serve day-for-day without the possibility of parole. In addition, the state asked that Gonzalez register as a sex offender for life.
Harkey deferred sentencing in the case until April 17, during which time a pre-sentence investigative report will be prepared.
Jackson County sheriff's deputies arrested Gonzalez in August 2010 after serving a search warrant at his home and seizing a room full of computers.
A grand jury later indicted Gonzalez on nine child exploitation charges. The state opted not to prosecute two of the charges in exchange for the plea.
According to court records, Gonzalez downloaded the images between Nov. 23, 2009, and Aug. 12, 2010.
Assistant District Attorney Angel Myers prosecuted the case. Attorney Calvin Taylor is representing Gonzalez, who is currently out of jail on bond but wearing a ankle bracelet to monitor his activities with additional orders to refrain from any access to the Internet.
