College notebook: Ole Miss baseball tops Tenn.-Martin
OLE MISS 6, TENN.-MARTIN 0 -- Ole Miss picked up a 6-0 victory over Tennessee-Martin (0-4) in the home opener at Swayze Field.
Waguespack (1-0) gave up two hits with three walks and two strikeouts in 4.0 innings of work, but got the win for the Rebels (4-0) as a bevy of pitchers saw action against the Skyhawks. Five other hurlers made their season debuts in the game: Preston Tarkington, Evan Anderson, Austin Blunt, Scott Weathersby and Jeremy Massie.
Alex Boshers (0-1) took the loss for UT-Martin as he allowed one run on two hits through 4.0 innings of work. The Skyhawks were held off the board by the Rebel pitching staff and defense.
MEMPHIS 6, MISSISSIPPI STATE 4 -- Memphis scored three runs, two earned, on Mississippi State closer Jonathan Holder in the ninth inning to upset the Bulldogs in Starkville on Wednesday.
Shortstop Ethan Gross led the Tigers (4-0) with two runs batted in.
Biloxi native Cody Brown led Mississippi State (2-2) with two RBIs of his own.
MSU BASEBALL ON TV -- Mississippi State baseball's Senior Day contest vs. Tennessee at 1:30 p.m. on May 11 and its final Friday regular-season game at Alabama at 6 p.m. on May 16 will both be televised by CBS Sports Network.
USM OFFERS SSC LINEMAN -- Southern Miss offered a football scholarship to St. Stanislaus offensive lineman Ryan Gibson on Wednesday, GoldenEaglePride.com reports.
Gibson also has scholarship offers from Air Force, Louisiana-Lafayette and Louisiana Tech.
The rising senior is listed at 6-foot-3, 255 pounds.
Gibson has no time frame on when he plans to make a decision on a verbal commitment.
