I think our baseball team should be called either the Biloxi or Gulfcoast Gamblers. We know that they're taking a big gamble on this and with all the casinos here, we sure have a lot of gamblers here.
Obama sure had me fooled! I thought he was doing nothing to fight illegal immigration. It seems that many illegals are now returning to Mexico because the job opportunity is better there.
Mitt Romney said yesterday, while discussing Hillary Clinton, that Bill Clinton led the country during largely positive economic times but that he had also embarrassed the nation with Lewinsky. I'll take a little embarrassment for good economic times for America.
In response to the article in Monday's Sun Herald by Daniel Ruth regarding cursive writing. I say amen and thank you. You do not see much cursive writing these days, due partly to computers. Writing used to be an art, in style as well as content. When I was in the seventh grade around 1957, I received a Penmanship Certificate. I was so proud and still am. I wish schools still did this. You should be proud of your writing style.
Slap in the face
Congress established George Washington's birthday on Feb. 22 as a national holiday in 1879. It was changed to the third Monday in February in 1971. Washington was set aside in 1980 through a concentrated push by business people to establish "President's Day," another excuse for a sale. George Washington, undoubtedly the most influential man in American history and the first President of these United States, doesn't get his own day. Instead he must share a day with Millard Fillmore, Rutherford B. Hayes and Richard Nixon, just to name a few. That is a travesty and a slap to the leader of our Founding Fathers, America's greatest generation.
What we need
A recent letter said Tea Party policies are not what our country needs. If you believe that Obama's policies have recovered this nation's economy, you are in la-la land. The current stock market highs have come from stimulus cash-rich companies and banks. The lower unemployment rate -- 6.6 percent -- is still higher than the "normal" 4-5 percent rate B.O. (Before Obama). There are less workers in the work force today than there has been in the last 35 years. Just about all that Obama has done -- Obama-care, tax policies, regulations -- has thwarted job growth in the private sector. He has done wonders with increasing the government's work force. It seems to me that the Tea Party policies -- tax reform, less regulations, no Obama-care, less government -- are exactly what our country needs.
