Ole Miss offers Pascagoula's Smith
Ole Miss has offered a football scholarship to Pascagoula receiver Jaylen Smith.
The Rebels are the first to offer a scholarship to the rising senior, who is also having a nice season with the Pascagoula basketball team.
"It's an in-state school. It's not close to home, but close enough," Smith said. "It's overwhelming, honoring. I'm happy."
Smith and fellow receiver Matthew Eaton, who signed with Temple this month, combined to give Pascagoula one of the best receiving duos in the state this past season.
The 6-foot-3 Smith caught 33 passes for 724 yards and nine touchdowns in his junior season at Pascagoula.
Smith said Tuesday that Mississippi State and Louisville are also close to offering him, but he is no rush to make a verbal commitment.
"I'm ready for it. I'm prepared for it," Smith said. "I know how to handle the questions and statements made by the coaches."
The Ole Miss offer should be the first of many for Smith, who has an impressive combination of hands, size and speed.
It was apparent as a sophomore that Smith was destined for an impressive high school career when he caught a 79-yard touchdown pass in a playoff victory at West Jones, running away from defenders on the score that sparked a 38-6 victory.
