Ole Miss has offered a football scholarship to Pascagoula receiver Jaylen Smith.

The Rebels are the first to offer a scholarship to the rising senior, who is also having a nice season with the Pascagoula basketball team.

Smith said he was excited to get his first offer from an SEC program.

"It's an in-state school. It's not close to home, but close enough," Smith said. "It's overwhelming, honoring. I'm happy."

Smith said he expects offers soon from Louisville and Mississippi State, but he doesn't plan on making a commitment anytime soon.

"I'm ready for it. I'm prepared for it," Smith said. "I know how to handle the questions and statements made by the coaches."

Smith and fellow receiver Matthew Eaton, who signed with Temple this month, combined to give Pascagoula one of the best receiving duos in the state this past season.

The 6-foot-3 Smith caught 33 passes for 724 yards and nine touchdowns in his junior season at Pascagoula.
