Have we totally lost so much respect for ourselves, our communities and our country that we fail to lead or teach by example?
I am a very proud sister of a former Marine who served in the first Desert Storm to liberate an innocent country, Kuwait, from the evils of Iraq.
I am a very proud grandmother of a granddaughter who has chosen the ranks of the Junior ROTC at Harrison Central High School as her way learning respect and an early training of growing up to hopefully pursue a career in the military to protect our freedom and our future as a country.
Saturday I was so excited to finally get to see her march in uniform in the Orange Grove Mardi Gras parade. I couldn't wait.
The anticipation grew, but my first disappointment was that the leader of the JROTC didn't require all of the young people to wear their uniforms proudly.
The second was when the flag corp, for which my granddaughter was in uniform and marching proudly, passed, No one, I mean no one applauded and/or cheered, nor did the men remove their hats as the American flag passed them. Sad, sad sad. I gave a shout out and applauded and then I heard maybe one or two others.
