Some work is worth more
Much has been said recently about inequality of income. There are indeed some people unjustly paid more than another person for the same work. However, inequality of income is predominantly caused by a marked difference in two people's contribution to the value of a company's product or service. A higher-paid person typically contributes more value, the lesser-paid person less. History of the rise and fall of the USSR has proved equality of income does not work. Although with some flaws, the capitalistic system of rewarding workers for their merit is far superior to any economic system that "rewards" them for just showing up. Rather than an equal division of income, we should be talking about an equitable allocation of income according to merit. There is a difference.
I beg to differ
Kudos to the Sun Herald staff for informing the public of DMR's under the table activities. And Miller claimed openness and accountability. I beg to differ.
To everyone watching and enjoying the Olympics: Would the entire experience be the same for the athletes and the spectators if everyone got a "participation" trophy? We are teaching our children there is no reward for working to excel by giving all who play sports a trophy.
Two out of three
I find it amazing the way politicians work. They are getting tough on the soft drink industry because it makes people fat. They are promoting the legalization of marijuana saying it is much better for you than alcohol. It does not ruin you liver or brain and is not fattening like alcohol is. Liver for sure; brain, 50/50; but marijuana is only nonfattening if you do not have a fridge or a phone to call the pizza man.
Upgraded defense needed
The United States needs new technology -- diesel submarines and Corvette-type surface ships for littoral defense. Instead of downsizing, as Mr. Obama sees fit to do, we should be upgrading as Russia and China are doing. They will hit us as soon as they think we are weak enough or they are likely to win. This is no Chicken Little talk, either.
Need a grocery store
Now that Tradition Parkway is a film Mecca, how about a nice grocery store in that area for the thousands who have to travel more than 20 minutes to buy groceries?
No free lunch
A Sound Off Saturday said public school students pay no tuition, so why not charge a fee for riding the bus? What do you mean public school students pay no tuition? I am a homeowner and pay school taxes, though we no longer have children in school. If I did have children in school who rode the bus, I would not want to pay more money to the school system.
