In the 1950s and early '60s, Gulfport had an amateur baseball team called the Shippers. That name was a good fit because of the busy port's heavy influence.
Biloxi now has a golden opportunity to put a stamp on selecting a name that is recognizable and easy to promote. When I think of Biloxi, I momentarily dismiss present day glitz and glamour and reflect instead on the past when Biloxi was a leader in not only the commercial seafood industry but also in the recreational sportfishing culture.
I am suggesting the name Biloxi Skippers, honoring the resilient shrimp boat and charter boat captains' rich heritage and continuing contributions to the area through products and tourism.
I'm sure everyone has a name in mind. I have a couple more myself -- the Bashers and Beacons. I especially like the Bashers.
Whatever name is selected, let's try to get it right and make Biloxi proud.
