PASCAGOULA -- Jackson County authorities have released more details on Thursday's accident that left an 83-year-old man dead.
Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Cherie Ward said a blue Ford F-150 pickup with two occupants was traveling about 40 mph on Forts Lake Road about 4:45 p.m. when Robert Ladnier Jr., driving an all-terrain vehicle east on Chatsworth Road, crossed into the truck's path.
Ward said according to witnesses, the truck's driver, a Vietnam veteran, swerved to avoid hitting Ladnier, but truck hit the left side of the ATV, throwing Ladnier off it.
Ward said witnesses were unsure if Ladnier didn't see truck or if he tried to beat it through the intersection.
Jackson County coroner Vicki Broadus said Ladnier died of a closed-head injury from blunt-force trauma.
No charges are expected to be filed, Ward said.
