Peter Misko Jr., a lifelong resident of the Mississippi Gulf Coast, celebrated his 100th birthday with his family at a restaurant.
Misko, born Jan. 13, 1914, in Biloxi, to Peter Misko Sr. and Katie Skrmetta Misko, was a shrimper and oysterman for 29 years. He was married to Gladys Cowart Misko for 64 years when she passed away in 2010.
He was a firefighter for the Biloxi Fire Department for 17 years until he retired in 1968. He also served in the Navy during World War II on the minesweeper USS Courlan in the Gulf of Mexico.
Misko was honored by the Veterans Administration Gulf Coast Veterans Health Care System in Biloxi by the Patient Centered Care Office. He was recognized for his military service and longevity.
His family includes daughter Elizabeth Cox and husband Pat, son Louis Misko and wife Amy Del Nagro, daughter Katherine Atchison and husband Milton, daughter Jeanette Leonard and husband Pat. He also has three grandchildren, Mark Cox, Katie Atchison and fiance Shaun Hartmann, and Eric Atchison. He has three great-grandchildren, Jared Hartmann, Aiden Atchison and Dylan Hartmann.
