Southern Miss senior catcher/designated hitter Jared Bales has decided to end his college career due to back injuries, USM announced Tuesday.

“This was a tough decision for Jared, but he has been fighting back injuries for the last two seasons and his No. 1 priority is his health,” USM coach Scott Berry said in a press release. “His leadership and experience will be missed on the field for us this spring.”

Bales earned Louisville Slugger Freshman All-American honors in 2011 after hitting .291 with two home runs and 21 RBIs in 32 starts at catcher.

The rest of the Picayune native's career has been injury plagued as he's struggled to get back on the field.

The Golden Eagles host Stony Brook on Feb. 14 to open the season with a three-game series.
