USM gets good recruiting news in hoops, football

The Southern Miss basketball and football teams each received verbal commitments on Monday:

* Seminole, Okla., running back Papi White gave his commitment to Southern Miss late Monday following an official visit to the school's campus over the weekend, according to

White rushed for over 3,000 yards and 42 touchdowns as a senior at Seminole this past season. He is a 5-foot-9, 180-pound athlete that could be used as either a receiver or running back at USM.

National signing day is Feb. 5.

* Guard Jaysean Paige of Moberly Area (Mo.) Community College gave his verbal commitment to the USM basketball team on Monday, according to

The Hazard, Ky., native averaged 15 points a game last season at Southern Idaho Community College before transferring to Moberly.

The 6-foot-2 Paige, who can play the point and two guard, was recruited by USM coach Donnie Tyndall and his staff as a high school star in Kentucky.
