Ocean Springs Deputy Police Chief Mark Dunston told the Sun Herald that Jackson County Sheriff Mike Byrd is turning himself in on grand jury charges, and expects Jackson County judges to recuse themselves from the case.


JACKSON COUNTY — Jackson County Sheriff Mike Byrd has been indicted on 31 criminal charges, and all but two of the charges are felonies.

The charges outlined in the 15-page indictments include 10 counts each of embezzlement and fraud, one charge of perjury, and two counts each of second-degree hindering prosecution, tampering with a witness, attempted subornation of perjury, intimidating an officer in the discharge of his duties and extortion.
