PATRICK MAGEE — SUN HERALD

— The Pascagoula football team is ranked No. 1 in Class 5A in the poll released by the Associated Press on Tuesday.

The Panthers, who finished as runners up in Class 5A in 2012, are coming off a 29-7 victory over Moss Point.

"It's either a blessing or a curse, one of the two,” Pascagoula coach Lewis Sims said of the news. “It's just very humbling that so many of the AP writers thought so highly of our young men. Going into a season you never really even expect that kind of thing.”

In the overall poll, Pascagoula is ranked 10th.

Pascagoula (1-0) travels to Ocean Springs (1-0) for a 7 p.m. game on Friday.
