USM QB Weeks earns scholarship

— Redshirt junior quarterback Cole Weeks was put on scholarship at the start of fall camp, Southern Miss head coach Todd Monken said Monday.

"He earned it," Monken said. "He put himself in position to be our starter."

Weeks, who was the No. 1 quarterback to start fall camp, is in a competition to be the starting quarterback in Saturday's 6 p.m. season opener against Texas State.

Weeks, a native of Freeport, Ala., walked on at USM after transferring in from Division II Brevard College following his freshman season there.

He received playing time late in the 2012 season, completing 8-of-19 passes for 106 yards with one interception.
