Monken still holding back on USM quarterback

— HATTIESBURG – Southern Miss coach Todd Monken again declined to name his starting quarterback for Saturday's season opener on Monday.

USM released a depth chart Monday listing redshirt junior Cole Weeks, redshirt senior Allan Bridgford and freshman Nick Mullens as the options at quarterback.

“I'm comfortable with one guy,” Monken said. “I'm just not going to announce it. It does us no good to announce it at this point.”

Bridgford, a first-year transfer from California, was receiving more snaps in practice at quarterback before Monken closed practice 11 days ago.

Redshirt sophomore Ricky Lloyd doesn't appear to be the mix after high expectations were placed on him as a top recruit out of California.

USM hosts Texas State at 6 p.m. Saturday.
