Oak Grove receiver commits to USM

Oak Grove receiver Picasso Nelson Jr. has given his verbal commitment to Southern Miss.

Nelson said Tuesday that he chose USM because he wanted to stay close to family in Hattiesburg.

"I love my family and I want them to come to every game," Nelson said. "I'll get to go to my own church and that was a big factor."

Nelson was recruited by Steve Buckley, and he said Tuesday that he built a strong relationship with the whole USM staff, especially safeties coach Andrew Thacker and cornerbacks coach Lytrell Pollard.

Nelson expects to switch to the defensive side of the ball when he gets to USM, potentially playing cornerback or safety. He has played some defense at Oak Grove in the past. Nelson's father is the former Jackson State standout defensive back.

He is listed at 5-foot-10, 175 pounds, and also has scholarship offers from Jackson State, UAB and Louisiana-Monroe, according to GoldenEaglePride.com.

"I'm just thankful for the opportunity to have a scholarship and I appreciate all the colleges that recruited me," Nelson said.

It seems like USM is consistently beating out Conference USA foe UAB on recruits. Each of USM's last four commitments (Darian Yancey, Curtis Mikell, Quade Alexander and Nelson) all had offers from UAB.
