Bennett 'encouraged' by meeting with former USM AD Hammond

Posted by PATRICK MAGEE on July 19, 2013

Southern Miss president Rodney Bennett and former athletic director Jeff Hammond met this week without making a final decision on whether Hammond will continue to work at the school in a different capacity.

Hammond was not renewed as athletic director when his contract expired at the end of June, but Bennett offered him the chance to work at the school in another unspecified role.

Bennett came away encouraged by the meeting and the two men plan to meet again soon, according to Jim Coll, USM's chief communications officer.

Bennett introduced Bill McGillis Thursday as the school's new athletic director. McGillis is the former senior associate athletic director at South Florida and the former athletic director at Evansville.

Hammond has given no indication on whether he plans to take another position at USM.
