Phil Steele projects USM as bowl team

Posted by PATRICK MAGEE on July 1, 2013

While most predictions have the Southern Miss football team falling short of the postseason in 2013, Phil Steele sees the Golden Eagles as bowl bound.

In Monday's projections, the popular prognosticator has USM playing Maryland in the Military Bowl on Dec. 27 in Annapolis, Md.

Steele's prediction tends to be on the optimistic side for the Golden Eagles.

Not only is Southern Miss coming off an 0-12 season, but it has seven road games to play this year. For USM to reach the postseason, it will have to come close to sweeping its five home games - MTSU, FAU, FIU, North Texas and Texas State.

Steele has six C-USA teams playing in bowls this year - Tulane (New Orleans Bowl), Rice (Hawaii Bowl), Marshall (Liberty Bowl), Tulsa (Heart of Dallas Bowl) East Carolina (Beef 'O' Brady's Bowl) and Southern Miss.
