Former UGA athletic director Evans not a candidate at Southern Miss

Former University of Georgia athletic director Damon Evans is not a candidate for the same position at Southern Miss despite the popular rumor that he is under heavy consideration for the job.

USM spokesman Jim Coll said Thursday that Evans has not been contacted for the job, nor has he expressed interest in the position.

“Furthermore, (USM president Rodney Bennett) doesn't see a scenario where he would hire Damon Evans,” Coll said.

Bennett announced last week that he will not to renew athletic director Jeff Hammond when his contract runs out on Monday.

Bennett plans to have a new athletic director in place by Aug. 31.

Evans, who now works for IMG College, had a controversial exit at Georgia when he was arrested on DUI charges while having a woman in his automobile who was not his wife. He pleaded guilty to the charges and left the school.

Bennett is the former vice president of student affairs at Georgia and he is being aided by former Georgia football coach and athletic director Vince Dooley during the search for Hammond's replacement.
