Jeff Hammond will not be retained as the Southern Miss athletic director after spending a year and a half in the interim role.

An official announcement is set for this morning on the school's campus.

Hammond, a former USM quarterback and Army major general, replaced Richard Giannini as athletic director early in 2012.

Hammond's time as athletic director included some controversy. One influential group of USM boosters didn't support his candidacy for the full-time job while a large of group of fans actively campaigned in support of Hammond.
