One top DMR official retires, another resigns

BILOXI -- Mississippi Department of Marine Resources Executive Director Jamie Miller said Friday two top officials are leaving the agency.

Miller told the Sun Herald that DMR Chief of Staff Joe Ziegler will retire June 30. Ziegler came to the DMR in July 1997.

Kerwin Cuevas, head of DMR's artificial reefs program, is resigning effective May 10. Cuevas had been at the DMR since December 1996.

Miller said he wasn't given any reason from the two about why they were leaving and their departures weren't initiated by him. He said the news came to him last week the two were leaving.

Miller took over the troubled agency April 4, after the DMR's governing board had fired former DMR Director Bill Walker in January amid ongoing state and federal investigations of the agency's spending. Walker, who took over in 2002, has denied wrongdoing.
