USM left out of NCAA Tournament field

— The bids are in and the Southern Miss basketball team will not be taking part in the "Big Dance."

The Golden Eagles had the highest RPI of any team left out of the field with a ranking of No. 32 in the official NCAA standings.

The NIT selection show will be held at 8 p.m. tonight on ESPNU.

The Golden Eagles should have a high seed in the NIT, and it's hard to imagine that they won't get a shot to host a first-round game.

USM finished the regular season with a 25-9 record.

Greg Gumble teased USM fans on the NCAA Tournament selection show on CBS by saying Memphis was the "first Conference USA team" when the Tigers were announced early in the show as a six-seed.

In the end, USM was not announced.

Southern Miss will be seeking a repeat of its 1987 NIT championship season.
