Following a 91-79 double-overtime loss to Memphis Saturday, the Southern Miss basketball team will have to wait to find out what its postseason fate is, but most see the Golden Eagles as NIT-bound.
USM put up a big fight today and deserves some credit from the NCAA Tournament selection committee for closing out the season on a strong run to the Conference USA Tournament championship game.
If the Golden Eagles have just an average performance at the free throw line today, they are likely celebrating a C-USA Tournament championship right now.
USM hit just 15-of-28 free throws Saturday. (ouch)
The Golden Eagles have a decent postseason resume with an RPI ranking near 30 and a record of 25-9. The big problem for USM is no victories over top 50 teams this season.
USM had to spend nearly all of the non-conference schedule on the road, and that has come back to hurt the team in the end.
If the NCAA Tournament bid doesn't work out, USM should have a pretty high seed in the NIT.
