Southern Miss to play UAB in C-USA quarterfinals

Southern Miss will face UAB at noon on Thursday in the quarterfinals of the Conference USA Tournament in Tulsa, Okla.

No. 7 seed UAB beat No. 10 SMU, 53-52, today in an ugly first-round contest at the BOK Center in downtown Tulsa.

SMU shot 28.6 percent from the field while UAB wasn't much better at 35.4. Jordan Swing led UAB with 17 points, hitting seven-of-13 shots.

Southern Miss swept the two-game series with UAB this season. The Golden Eagles eased past the Blazers, 74-59, on Jan. 19 in Hattiesburg while USM won, 79-75, in Birmingham on Feb. 2.

UAB played better basketball down the stretch this season, winning eight of its last 12 games.

Southern Miss was 23-8 and 12-4 in the regular season, good enough to grab the No. 2 seed in the C-USA Tournament.

Six-foot-5 forward Rod Rucker leads UAB with an average of 14.5 points a game while the sharp-shooting Swing is putting up 14.1 points a contest.

Houston-Rice will play at 6 p.m. today in Tulsa while Tulane and Marshall play the late game at 8:30 p.m.

If USM wins Thursday, it will play at 3 p.m. on Friday in a semifinal match against either UTEP, Rice or Houston.

All quarterfinal and semifinal games will be broadcast by CBS Sports. The title game will be at 10:35 a.m. on Saturday and will be televised by CBS.
