USM BLOG: Athletic facilities 'unscathed,' games on schedule

Published: February 11, 2013

Southern Miss athletic facilities went “unscathed” while a tornado ripped through the southern portion of campus on Sunday, athletic director Jeff Hammond said this afternoon.

After performing a quick check on facilities Sunday evening, USM officials did a more thorough evaluation today to make sure everything was in good order.

“We're in great shape other than a little debris cleanup on the football turf,” Hammond said. “We turned on the scoreboard and checked the systems out.”

The USM athletic department was also doing what it could to help a pair of its employees deal the impact of the storm. Associate athletic director Brent Jones and women's volleyball coach Abbey Sutherland both suffered major damage to their homes on Sunday.

Hammond said that all USM athletic events are on schedule this week.

The USM men's basketball team hosts Tulane at 7 p.m. on Wednesday and the baseball team opens its season at 4 p.m. Friday to begin a three-game home series against Missouri.
