DMR troubles may prompt legislation

State Senate Ports and Marine Resources Committee Chairman Brice Wiggins, R-Pascagoula, said he is going to draft bills to force better oversight of DMR and other state agencies during the 2013 legislative session, which will start in January.

The legislator wants state agencies to provide more detail about the money they get from the federal government and through grants, and their use of foundations, among other funding sources.

"It is apparent these agencies had money that was going outside the appropriations/budgeting process," Wiggins said. "It seems to me from what I've been told and also read, that is the big issue -- that these agencies can use the money without the built-in checks and balances of legislative oversight."
