State investigating officer-related shooting in Waveland (Updated 11 a.m.)

Published: March 31, 2012

— The state crime unit is in Waveland this morning to investigate a deadly shooting involving a police officer, Waveland Chief Kenny Hurt said.

American Medical Response took the man to Hancock County Medical Center shortly after 3:30 a.m.

Hancock County Coroner Jim Faulk confirmed the man died shortly after. His identity is being withheld pending notification of next of kin, Hurt said.

The shooting took place across from Walmart on U.S. 90 behind Rex Auto, he said.

Because a police officer was involved, Mississippi Bureau of Investigations, an agency of the Department of Public Safety, will head up the investigation.

State Highway Patrol Master Sgt. Johnny Poulos said Waveland police responded to a suspicious vehicle behind the Travel Express Inn on U.S. 90, which resulted in a foot pursuit.

Poulos said the subject displayed a weapon during the pursuit.
