State arts commission seeks input

JACKSON -- The Mississippi Arts Commission will travel the state in February to hear what local communities would like to have in terms of the arts, culture and creative opportunities.

The MAC will go to Cleveland on Feb. 1, Tupelo on Feb. 2 and Meridian on Feb. 8. Meetings will be held in late February on the Coast and in the Southwest region.

Regulators pushed to drop statewide burn ban

JACKSON -- Although almost no one seems to know it, it’s illegal for everyday citizens to burn common waste in Mississippi.

That may be about to change as the Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality comes under pressure to change the rule. The ban conflicts with long-held custom, even though it helps Mississippi meet federal air standards for ozone and particle pollution and protects people with asthma and other breathing problems.

Mississippians pile up leaves and branches in their yard and burn them, especially in the fall and winter, instead of having them hauled away as trash.

Legislators are now talking about modifying or abolishing the ban, or giving local governments the ability to regulate burning.

$1 police car now patrolling community college

TUPELO -- The Tupelo Police Department on Friday donated a used patrol car to Itawamba Community College. ICC’s Tupelo Campus Police Department will use the car to promote a safe environment for students. ICC paid $1 for the car, removed the stripes and added ICC’s logo and striping.

“I think this is one more example of how we all work together, and I think any time we can work together it only benefits the entire city of Tupelo,” said Tupelo police Maj. Anthony Hill.
