PASS CHRISTIAN -- A fire destroyed a home on stilts Friday in the Henderson Point community and would have spread to a nearby home had it not been for the quick response of two groups of firefighters, Harrison County Fire Marshal Pat Sullivan said.
The afternoon blaze destroyed a home at 202 Bayview Street, where a woman lived alone but was not home at the time, Sullivan said.
The fire also destroyed a boat underneath the elevated home and a camper parked beside it.
The house was engulfed in flames when members of the Pass Christian Fire Department and Henderson Point fire station arrived.
We received initial reports of people trapped in a home, but it was people on the balcony at the neighboring home, and they managed to get down, Sullivan said.
The two homes were a few yards a part, he said.
Additional units responded from Harrison County Fire Services, with about 15 firefighters putting out the blaze. Police temporarily shut down Bayview from U.S. 90.
The name of the homeowner was not available.
Sullivan said the cause of the fire is under investigation, though it did not appear foul play was involved.
