GAUTIER -- Prior to finalizing regulations for surveying and drilling for gas and oil in state waters, the Mississippi Development Authority held a meeting in Gautier on Friday at which Coast residents could gather information and voice their opinions.
Those who attended the open house–style meeting on the Jackson County campus of Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College could submit comments to be considered for the final version of MDA’s 21-page draft of rules and regulations, said Dan Turner, MDA marketing and communications division director.
Public comment on the state document closes at 5 p.m. Tuesday.
Turner said the comment deadline was extended from Jan. 20, allowing 43 days for input because the document was released via MDA’s website.
Some conservationist groups, such as the Gulf Restoration Network and Gulf Islands Conservancy, have asked MDA to extend the deadline even further, concerned residents have not had enough time or information to review and comment on the regulations.
Five hours into Friday’s meeting, only about a dozen residents had showed up, said Sally Williams, MDA public relations manager. Most came for information but did not submit a formal comment, she said.
Turner said most of the comments on the rules and regulations have been constructive but acknowledged MDA has received letters from organizations requesting more time for public comment.
