GULFPORT -- Police say they arrested a suspect this afternoon in a hit-and-run that killed a 15-year-old girl on 34th Street.
Officials identified Jermel Maurice Bogan, 25, as the driver who allegedly struck Elisha Skinner and left the scene.
Police Chief Alan Weatherford said Bogan will be booked at the Harrison County jail and held on a $1 million bond set. The Mississippi Department of Corrections will place a hold on him on a probation warrant, Weatherford said.
The girl’s family had reported her missing Monday night. Her remains were discovered Tuesday morning in a ditch along the road.
Earlier today, officials confirmed they found a Chevrolet Impala, the type of car they believe struck her. The car was in the 8300 block of Louisiana Avenue.
Officials credited the public with calling in tips after reading news reports about the incident.
The penalty range for conviction of leaving the scene of a fatal accident is five to 20 years in prison.
