St. Patrick beat Natchez Cathedral 4-0 on Tuesday night in the first round of the 1A-2A-3A state soccer playoffs.

The Coast weather held off until the second half, which allowed the Fighting Irish to jump out to an early 2-0 lead at the half. Junior Connor Ladner, freshman Clark Copponex, and freshman Stephen Alexander, all contributed with goals.

Alexander scored twice. He finished a right cross with a header into the back of the Green Wave net in the 20th minute. He later scored on an unassisted goal in the 62nd minute.

“I think those two goals helped us out a lot,” Alexander said. “But without the team I probably couldn’t have scored. We just kept possession so well.”

Natchez Cathedral played a tough schedule, including a 2-0 loss to 6A team Terry.

“We had a little bit of a fatigue factor, and some minor injuries,” Green Wave head coach Dennis Hogue said. “Of course, having eleven on the field and three on the bench is tough. We had no real anticipation of winning the game, we just wanted the other team to respect us at the end of regulation.”

The Green Wave only managed four shots on goal, and suffered in time of possession. In comparison, the Irish took 22 shots on goal and maintained the time of possession for 58 minutes of the regulation 80 minutes.

St. Patrick coach Mario Camps looks forward to his 18th consecutive trip leading his team to the postseason.

“More hard teams come, we’ll see,” Camps said. “In soccer, anything can happen.”
