Vote to override veto of wind pool fails in House

— A move to override a veto by Gov. Haley Barbour and pump $20 million into the state insurance wind pool in an effort to stabilize insurance premiums for the Coast failed to get the 80 votes needed in the House today.

The House voted 68 to 52 in favor of the veto after impassioned speeches from Coast lawmakers. Opponents argued that the money, which would have come from a Katrina reserve fund set up after the hurricane devastated South Mississippi in 2005, would not affect premiums at least for the next year.

Supporters said the money would help prevent drastic rate increases in 2012.
