PASCAGOULA -- Firefighters were on the scene of the The Greater Antioch Missionary Baptist Church fire until 1 a.m. this morning.

At 8 a.m., they still were dealing with hot spots, said Pascagoula Fire Battalion Chief Michael May.

The church building was surrounded by yellow fire scene tape this morning, with its metal roof peeled back in spots, brick falling off the walls and burned rafters exposed.

The shell of the building is still intact and the steeple is still standing this morning. No one has been inside, however, to determine whether it's structurally sound.

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms, the state fire marshal's office and Pascagoula fire investigators will begin going through the remains on the scene, May said.

City workers at the scene said they believed there would be little, if anything, to salvage of the contents inside.
