Surge re-sign league's top defenseman

August 5, 2010

The Mississippi Surge today said that 2009-2010 SPHL Defenseman of The Year Steve Weidlich will be returning to the Power Plant with the Mississippi Surge for the upcoming season.

“Steve Weidlich brings a diversity of experience and a tough, hard-nosed edge and tremendous skill set that has a calming affect to not only our young D-men, but to the rest of our squad,” said head coach Steffon Walby.

Weidlich, a native of Spruce Grove Alberta, will be entering his ninth year as a professional and his second year on the Coast as a player assistant. Steve had a great year in the statistical category, in 54 games played he tallied 42 points (6g, 36a) and piling up a whopping 185 penalty minutes. Steve had a huge part in securing the leagues best penalty kill as well as having a hand in the leagues lowest goals against.

“I am truly excited and very optimistic about this upcoming season," Weidlich said. "We have a great nucleus coming back and a hunger to be the league’s best. I love the Coast as well as our devoted fans; can’t wait till opening night.”
