Gulfport man charged after shooting overnight

July 5, 2010

— Police have charged a Gulfport man with two counts of aggravated assault after a shooting overnight.

According to police, officers from Gulfport responded to apartments on Courthouse Road at 11:51 p.m. for a report of shots fired.

When they arrived, police were confronted by a man with a gun. An officer fired and struck the suspect, who was taken to a local hospital for treatment.

Bryan Matthew Casey, 25, is charged with one count of shooting before police arrived and the second count accuses him of pointing a weapon at officers as they arrived, according to Sgt. Chris Ryle.

Casey was taken to a Jackson hospital for treatment.

Gulfport police has notified the Harrison County District Attorney's Office and the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation, which typically conducts investigations when an officer is involved in the shooting.

Once MBI concludes a probe in an officer-involved shooting, the results are turned over to the district attorney's office.
